FRESH & TIGHT
Christian Moreau is among the elite of Chablis producers, and in the Grand Cru field 'Les Clos', for many the best of the Grand Crus in Chablis, he is considered the king. On the Grand Cru parcels in Chablis, the grapes get the perfect amount of sun, rain and nourishment from the soil. Moreau is also perfect for balancing the use of steel tanks and cask aging, so that the wine becomes full-bodied, but at the same time elegant. This masterpiece is created from only the best Chardonnay grapes from different parcels of the Les Clos field. The vines are on average 45-70 years old, and the grapes from here are harvested by hand and vinified in temperature-controlled steel tanks. The wine is aged for 6 months in a combination of steel tanks and primarily used and slightly used oak barrels. The result is a fresh, dense and full-bodied Chablis with a balanced acidity and nuances of citrus, salt, flowers, pineapple and white smoke.
ABOUT THE WINERY
DOMAINE CHRISTIAN MOREAU
Jean Joseph Moreau worked in the early 1800s as a tonnelier - the profession where you produce wine barrels. In 1814, however, he changed tracks and established himself as a wine merchant with the house J. Moreau & Fils. The family's great hope in recent times was Christian Moreau, but he chose at the age of 17 to immigrate to Canada. In 1985, the company was sold to Boisset de Nuits Saint-Georges. When Christian Moreau returned home to Chablis with his wife and three sons seven years later, he was determined to follow the path of wine. His father Guy taught him everything he knew about the trade, and in 2002 Christian bought back the family's 12 ha of vineyards and began rebuilding the estate.Today, he runs Christian Moreau Père & Fils together with his son Fabien, who is the mastermind behind the estate's fabulous wines. The house's regular Chablis is among France's most sought-after white wines. They also make the 1st cru Vaillon as well as the grand cru wines Blanchot, Vaudésir, Valmur and the fabulous Les Clos. The production is carried out organically.
Chardonnay
Wine drinkers find it flatteringly easy to enjoy, with its broad, exuberant charms, relatively high alcohol and low acidity, and lack of powerful scent. Vine growers find it easy to grow productively and profitably (it can yield well, ripen usefully early, although buds rather too early for frost-free comfort in cool climates). And winemakers revel in the range of different winemaking techniques to which Chardonnay readily submits: not just a wide range of dry white wines with more weight than most, but delicate sparkling wines and even a few extremely successful sweet white wines made with the benefit of 'noble rot'.
