Adega do Monte Branco

Alento Tinto

WINE 14

FRESH FRUIT & BALANCED ACIDITY

An easily accessible red wine made mainly from grapes typical of the eastern Alentejo. The wine has a nice red color with pomegranates, an intense aroma and taste notes of red berries. The fruit is clear, but the wine also has a freshness and a particularly well-balanced acidity. Although the fruit is as distinct as it is, this is a dry wine, as the residual sugar content of less than 0.6 grams per liter also indicates. The grapes are completely destemmed and, after pressing, have been allowed to macerate with skin contact for two days before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at between 24 and 26°C.

FRISK FRUGT & AFBALANCERET SYRE

ABOUT THE WINERY

ADEGA DO MONTE BRANCO

Adega doMonte Branco is a relatively young project. Luís Louro started the project at the beginning of the millennium and in 2004 the winery itself stood clear on top of the Monte Branco hill outside Estremoz. Not at the highest point in the area - but the second highest.First he built the winery, and made a number of small productions together with friends in the wine industry. But in 2008 he started production under his own name, Adega do Monte Branco, on grapes he bought in the area, to maintain the taste of Estremoz. But quite quickly Luís realized that he also wanted to control the actual grape production, which is why in recent years land around the Adega has been bought up and planted with wine. These are still small areas, but we are on our way.

General grape descriptions

Aragonez

The same grape as Spain’s Tempranillo. Tinta Roriz is a very fine varietal of extraordinary quality, hence its presence in two legendary wines produced on the Iberian Peninsula: the Portuguese Barca Velha and the Spanish Vega Sicilia. This grape has also been grown for centuries in the Alentejo, but under the name of Aragonês. In good years it produces full-bodied, inky and highly aromatic wines. The grape has fine and delicate aromas of pepper and berries. Aragonês has high yields and is indispensable in the blend of a good Port. Varietal red wines are also showing good results, particularly in the Dão region, while the best blends of Alentejo generally rely upon ample percentages of Tinta Roriz, as do the dry reds of the Douro.

Touriga Nacional

Few would dispute that the Touriga Nacional is Portugal's finest red grape variety, deserving a place right up at the top of the world league of grapes, along with the likes of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo. Though Northern in origin, it has spread right across the country - you will find it down south in the Algarve and the Alentejo, out west in the Ribatejo/Tejo and Setúbal regions, successfully competing with the local Baga grape in Bairrada, and way out mid-Atlantic in the Azores. Touriga Nacional is a thick-skinned grape, and those skins are rich in colour and tannins, giving excellent structure and ageing capacity. But it also has wonderful, intense flavours, at the same time floral and fruity - ripe blackcurrants, raspberries - with complex hints also of herbs and liquorice.
