Tenuta San Guido

Bolgheri Sassicaia

WINE 78

ICONIC WINE FROM TUSCANY

This wine is a world-famous iconic wine from Tuscany. It has taste notes of black currant, red plum, blueberry and cask. A dry and medium-bodied wine, good at the same time very refined.
Sassicaia was originally produced up in the hills behind San Guido, but as the wine became successful, the area has expanded, and as the family has more than 2,500 acres at its disposal, there has been plenty to take away.
Today, the fruit thus comes from a mosaic of small plots both up on the slopes and down around the domain. More than 90 ha. is the case gradually, and from here, after a careful selection, the best lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in Sassicaia end.

ABOUT THE WINERY

TENUTA SAN GUIDO

It is not so long ago that it was the sunflowers and not the vines that stood looking for the light on the coastal plain below the Caselli reserve south of Livorno. But then there was a Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who had planted Cabernet back in 1944, and Piero Antinori's best friend and iconic Francophone winemaker Giacomo Tachis, who came by and arranged for the first bottles of Sassicaia to go on sale in 1971.
Only in 1994, when the planted area had passed the 250 ha., Came the revision of the DOC regulations, which closed the red wines into the heat and at the same time placed Sassicaia as a very special Bolgheri Superiore. A position that was expanded in 2013 when authorities lifted Sassicaia up on the very top shelf of the Italian hierarchy. Sassicaia's very own Denominazione di Origine Controllata Bolgheri Sassicaia.
Today, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta's adopted son Sebastiano Rosa is behind Sassicaia in close collaboration with one of Italy's leading female winemakers, Graziana Grassini. Giacomo Tachis had spotted Graziana as early as the 1980s when she created her first wines for Castello del Terriccio and he brought her into the circle around San Guido. So when the old champion retired in 2009, Graziana Grassini stepped up next to Sebastiano Rosa.

General grape descriptions

Cabernet Sauvignon

The world’s most popular red wine grape is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux, France. Cabernet Sauvignon is loved for its high concentration and age-worthiness.

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the most widely planted red grape varietals in the world. Plantings can be found across Europe, the New World and in China. In many wine regions, it is planted as a component of a Bordeaux-style blend, playing a supportive role to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In parts of north-east Italy and the right bank region of Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc both plays a more prominent role in blends and is made as a single varietal.
Cabernet Franc with its lower tannin levels than Cabernet Sauvignon, can make a bright red wine, with contributing finesse and a peppery aroma to blends with more robust grape varietals. Depending on growing conditions and style of wine, additional aromas can include tobacco, blueberry, raspberry, cassis and sometimes even violets.
