Roche de Bellene by Nicolas Potel

Meursault

WINE 75

CREAMY & SOFT

Nicolas Potel proves once again that he has an in-depth understanding when it comes to the municipalities in Burgundy's distinctive expression. For this wine, he has obtained grapes from a field of just 0.85 ha, where the surroundings and the terroir ensure a classic and recognizable Meursault expression. The vines for the wine are on average 55 years old, the grapes stand on slopes with an east / south-east exposure and in the soil you will find clay and limestone. In the cellar, the fermentation takes place with natural yeast, to ensure the terroir imprint, and the wine is stored for almost 12 months in oak barrels. Here you get Meursault as it should express itself best - look forward to a creamy, silky texture that is accompanied by juicy and ripe fruit.

ABOUT THE WINERY

ROCHE  DE BELLENE BY NICOLAS POTEL

The man behind Domaine de Bellene is the legendary Nicolas Potel. He is the son of Gérard Potel, who headed the excellent Pousse d’Or estate in Volnay. Nicolas was certainly more of a practical craftsman than he was a theorist. Even before his 18th birthday, he left school and began a career with winemakers in Australia and the United States before returning to Burgundy. Here he first worked for Domaine Roumier and Domaine Juillot, before ending up with his father again at the Pousse d’Or in 1992.

General grape descriptions

Chardonnay

Wine drinkers find it flatteringly easy to enjoy, with its broad, exuberant charms, relatively high alcohol and low acidity, and lack of powerful scent. Vine growers find it easy to grow productively and profitably (it can yield well, ripen usefully early, although buds rather too early for frost-free comfort in cool climates). And winemakers revel in the range of different winemaking techniques to which Chardonnay readily submits: not just a wide range of dry white wines with more weight than most, but delicate sparkling wines and even a few extremely successful sweet white wines made with the benefit of 'noble rot'.
