Chateau Villa Bel Air

Bordeaux Blanc

WINE 50

DEEP & FRUTY

White wine from Bordeaux is generally an overlooked genre in the world of wine, and that's a real shame. Especially when, as here, with this beauty from Chateau Villa Bel Air, you can get a wonderfully creamy, fruity and delicious white wine at a really affordable and nice price. The grapes for this white Graves wine in the 2021 vintage consist of 50 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 50 percent Semillon. The grapes are vinified in oak barrels, and the wine is aged "sur lie" (on the remains of grape skins, pulp and seeds) at 30 per cent. new and the rest lightly used dishes for approx. 12 months. The final result is a full-bodied wine with light tropical and citrus-fresh notes.

DYB & FRUGTIG

ABOUT THE WINERY

CHATEAU VILLA BEL AIR

This 18th century castle is located in the southern part of the Graves district and is classified as a historical monument from the period around the French Revolution. In 1988, Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch-Bages in Pauillac bought the property from the Mauriac family. At that time, all the vines were uprooted, so all the fields had to be replanted. Cellars and production facilities were also brought up to date with the latest technical equipment. The property is 44 ha, of which 32 ha are planted with cabernet sauvigning, merlot and cabernet franc and 12 ha with sauvignon blanc and semillon. The style of the white wines is fresh and elegant, while the reds have both finesse and structure.

General grape descriptions

Sauvignon Blanc

Often called simply Sauvignon, extremely popular variety making crisp, dry, aromatic and extremely distinctive wines all over the world. The smell is sharp and piercing and reminds different tasters variously of gooseberries, nettles, crushed blackcurrant leaves, and occasionally cat’s pee. With age, aromas reminiscent of canned asparagus can develop.

Most Sauvignon Blanc is fermented at relatively low temperatures in stainless steel with the intention of preserving every bit of youthful fruit. The wines are in general designed to be drunk as young as possible, although some of the fruit from particularly low-yielding vineyards can be concentrated to withstand oak ageing and may need a year or so in bottle before showing their best.
