Bouchard Père & Fils

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

MINERAL & RICH FRUIT

A very mineral and rank wine with dense and rich fruit. White peach, lemon zest, flint, lime, fine acid and high intensity. Top of white wine, anywhere in the world. Bouchard bought 60% of "Le Corton" on the east side in 1909: just over 3.6 of the field's 6.9 ha; close to the forest at 320-340 m altitude, where the cool nights provide fantastic wine excitement, even in warm vintages.
The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted manually grape by grape. After free flow of must, the grapes are pressed very slowly and gently. After fermentation, the wine is stored in oak for 12-13 months; never more than 15% new casks to preserve the wine's steeled character.
The name Corton-Charlemagne refers to Karl the Great, who reigned from 768 - 814, and is said to have ordered the planting of white wine in the highest, southwest-facing areas because the red wine discolored his beard!

MINERALSK & RIG FRUGT

ABOUT THE WINERY

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS

Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest producers in Burgundy and is the largest vineyard owner in the Cote d'Or. The house owns, among other things 12 acres of Grand Cru, as well as 74 acres of Premier Cru fields. In 1995, Joseph Henriot bought himself into Bouchard Père & Fils, and he invested a lot of money in building a new winery that was completed in 2005. In the 3-story underground building, gravity takes the wine through the various processes of vinification. The modern technology combined with respect for traditions and the old know-how ensure that the many wines of the domain can each express the diverse terroir found in Burgundy. In 2015, Bouchard Père & Fils was certified sustainable in areas that focus on eco-friendly approaches to winemaking.

General grape descriptions

Chardonnay

Wine drinkers find it flatteringly easy to enjoy, with its broad, exuberant charms, relatively high alcohol and low acidity, and lack of powerful scent. Vine growers find it easy to grow productively and profitably (it can yield well, ripen usefully early, although buds rather too early for frost-free comfort in cool climates). And winemakers revel in the range of different winemaking techniques to which Chardonnay readily submits: not just a wide range of dry white wines with more weight than most, but delicate sparkling wines and even a few extremely successful sweet white wines made with the benefit of 'noble rot'.
