Gewurztraminer

SPICY & EXOTIC

Spicy nose, exotic fruit and mandarin. The taste is full, but with good balance, structured and precise with little residual sweetness, but also residual acid to balance. The wine is from several small fields around Ribeauvillé. A total of 1.86 ha have been planted with Traminer. This one is from parcels of limestone and lime, which give a good acidity to the wine. After harvesting by hand, the grapes are soaked for 48 hours without enzymes and yeast. Fermented in oak for 2 months and then sur lie on oak until bottling.

KRYDRET & EKSOTISK

ABOUT THE WINERY

HENRY FUCHS

Henry Fuchs is a small domain from 1922 in historic Ribeauvillé with a total of 10.5 ha., Including plots in Bergheim and Hunawihr. Paul Fuchs and children deliver high quality wines that combine pure ecology (certified 2011) with gifted craftsmanship. Emphasis is placed on gentle field work, where the microbiological life of the soil is as little as possible. For example there are natural weeds between the vines, which are mowed and not plowed. Chemical fertilizers and herbicides are not used. Harvesting is done by hand, the grapes are pressed very gently before fermentation and the use of sulfur is minimized.

General grape descriptions

Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape varietal, that is related to the 'Traminer' grape; which translates to - 'the village of Tramin', 'Termeno' in the Alto Adige region of northern Italy. Where it was popular between the 11th - 16th centuries. It is believed to be a mutation of 'Savagnin Blanc' to what is now 'Savagnin Musque' - another name for Gewurztraminer.
The name Gewurz is also curious, although its German translation means 'spicy' - in fact the official protected name only occurred in 1973, it's French and Italian names (traminer-musque, traminer-parfume, and termener-aromatico) lead one to believe that the wine's aromas would indicate a more accurate translation. Roses and Turkish-delight are generally the most common aromas, followed by lychee's and even grapefruit.
