Herdade de Coelheiros

Coelheiros Branco

PURE & STRICT

Coelheiros Branco 2017 is a pure and strict white wine made from the Arinto grape. The white wines of Alentejo are typically quite fruity, but this one is more floral in the nose. The wine has a good minerality, you can almost taste that the vineyard is a mixture of granitic sand with strips of clay.
It is a wine with fine flavor and good body, fine acid balance and a rather weak note of wood that in no way takes over.

STILREN & STRINGENT

ABOUT THE WINERY

HERDADE DE COELHEIROS

In the Portuguese context, Tapada de Coelheiros is a historic property. It is first mentioned in the 15th century and has, among others, belonged to Ruy de Sousa, who represented Portugal in the negotiations for the Treaty of Tordesilhas with the Castile. The agreement divided the New World between the two countries, and sealed simultaneously peace between the two neighboring countries. Already at that time Tapada de Coelheiros was famous for its wine.
Large-scale wine cultivation has otherwise had severe conditions in the very hot and dry region of Alentejo, but early on the farm established a series of water reservoirs which meant that the fields could be irrigated by gravity.

General grape descriptions

Arinto

This is a versatile grape, grown in most of Portugal's wine regions. In Vinho Verde country, it goes by the name of Pedernã. It makes vibrant wines with lively, refreshing acidity, often with a mineral quality, along with gentle flavours reminiscent of apple, lime and lemon. Arinto-based wines can keep well but are also delicious young. Because it keeps its acidity even in hot climates, Arinto is often added to other lower-acid white grapes to improve blends - especially in the hot Alentejo and Ribatejo.
