Hewitson

Baby Bush

SOFT & FRUITY

A medium-bodied wine of 100% Mourvèdre. Blackberries, blueberries and black cherries united with dried herbs and mullet. The taste is soft with fully ripe tannins that back up the forest berries and root vegetables. These vines are cuttings from Hewitson's other well-known Mourvèdre field, Old Garden, planted in 1853, which is the world's oldest field of grapes. Baby Bush vines grow as individual shrubs, meaning 4that they are not tied up. Grass grows between the rows and irrigation does not occur. In the cellar, a combination of whole bunches and pressed grapes is used in the fermentation and the wine is stored in small French, lightly toasted oak barrels for 15 months.

ABOUT THE WINERY

Hewitson

Located in the heart of the Barossa Valley on historic Seppeltsfield Road, Hewitson owns some of the oldest vines in the world. The house's philosophy is to make wines that express the soil and conditions in which they grow. Through knowledge and experience, Hewitson strives for balance, structure, concentration and power. Hewitson does not use irrigation. They take pride in producing the wines sustainably by using solar energy, recycling water and supporting biodiversity.
Hewitson was founded in 1998 by Dean Hewitson, having traveled and worked in several major French wine districts for the past 12 years and earned a Master of Winemaking in California. Dean is the general manager of Hewitson and also oversees both production and sales.
One of the first things Dean did when he started the winery in 1998 was to take cuttings from the vines in the Old Garden and plant them in the field he calls Baby Bush.

General grape descriptions

Mourvèdre

Although nowadays it travels most commonly under its French name Mourvèdre, the vine’s origins are almost certainly Spanish, probably in the Levante, where today the great majority of all the plantings in the world are concentrated. (It may take its French name from the Spanish city of Murviedro.) It needs a hot, dry climate for it is very late ripening and susceptible to both mildews and low winter temperatures so in France it can thrive only in the country’s warmest corners. It was Provence’s most planted vine before phylloxera decimated France’s vineyards and it was then largely replaced by varieties that were easier to graft on to the available rootstocks.
