ABOUT THE WINERY

DOMAINE KREYDENWEISS

The village of Andlau lies in the mountains behind Dambach and is built around the Benedictine monastery from the 8th century. Kreydenweiss cared for the vines for the monks, but after the revolution gained their own domain. Marc was the pioneer of biodynamic operations in Alsace and an example to many biodynamics today. The son Antoine took over the leadership in 1999, when Marc moved to the Rhone domain. The wines have certainly not been inferior to Antoine. The methods are strictly biodynamic with minimal or no sulfur in the wines. The yield from the vines is below half the average in Alsace. Antoine delivers wines with length and depth as well as a distinctive aroma and elegance. The wine gets almost more character from the soil than from the grape variety. It can be seen on the label, where the name of the grape variety is usually in lowercase on the back label -in front is the name of the vine and domain.

General grape descriptions

Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape varietal, that is related to the 'Traminer' grape; which translates to - 'the village of Tramin', 'Termeno' in the Alto Adige region of northern Italy. Where it was popular between the 11th - 16th centuries. It is believed to be a mutation of 'Savagnin Blanc' to what is now 'Savagnin Musque' - another name for Gewurztraminer.
The name Gewurz is also curious, although its German translation means 'spicy' - in fact the official protected name only occurred in 1973, it's French and Italian names (traminer-musque, traminer-parfume, and termener-aromatico) lead one to believe that the wine's aromas would indicate a more accurate translation. Roses and Turkish-delight are generally the most common aromas, followed by lychee's and even grapefruit.
