Nicolas Joly

Les Vieux Clos

ELEGANT & FRESS

All grapes come from vines, all replanted with cuttings from the best existing vines, all of which date back to the Middle Ages due to this. This is called Selection Massale. It helps maintain the aromatic intensity. The soil is mainly rocky, but also has some sand. This helps to highlight the minerality along with a pleasant fruit note.

ELEGANT & FRISK

ABOUT THE WINERY

NICOLAS JOLY

Nicolas Joly is one of the pioneers in biodynamic wine farming, and he is in charge of Vignobles de la Coulée de Serrant. The domain has worked ecologically and biodynamically since 1980, and is recognized worldwide for its wines with impressive depth and elegance. Joly seeks the "true wine" with respect for nature: "I only want a good wine but also a true wine". All field work is done with the help of horses and hand power and the harvest can extend over five times in four weeks to obtain the best possible ripe and botrytised grapes.

Joly søger den ”ægte vin” med respekt for naturen: ”I don’t only want a good wine but also a true wine”.

General grape descriptions

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a white wine grape varietal from the Loire Valley of France - and is the wine region most closely associated with the varietal. Chenin Blanc is an authorized planting in many AOP wine regions but is mostly planted in the Middle Loire AOPs of Anjou, Bonnezeaux, Crémant de Loire, Coteaux de l'Aubance, Coteaux du Layon, Jasnières, Montlouis, Quarts de Chaume, Saumur, Savennières, and Vouvray.
Chenin Blanc probably originated as a mutation of the Pineau d'Aunis (Chenin Noir) in Anjou - and is one of the world's most versatile grapes. Its high acidity means it can be used to craft everything from sparkling wines to well-balanced dessert and fortified wines, although it can produce very bland, neutral wines if the vine's natural vigour is not controlled.
