Covela Avesso Reserva

WINE 44

FRESH & MINERAL

The wine is aged on a mixture of French and Austrian oak barrels. Austrian barrels are known to have a milder wood flavor than French barrels, and the effect is that the wine retains a part of its minerality that may otherwise be reduced by aging in oak barrels. The wine is spontaneously fermented, which means that fermentation is started only by the yeast cells that sit on the skins of the grapes when they are picked. In the glass, the wine is golden, with bright, almost white reflexes. In the nose you experience stone fruits as apples, pears and peaches - but after a while in the glass aromas of a more tropical nature such as pineapple and coconut. In the mouth, the wine appears creamy with a fresh and mineral acid.

FRISK & MINERALSK

ABOUT THE WINERY

QUINTA DE COVELA

On the sinuous terraces of a natural amphitheatre perched high above the right bank of the Douro river, Quinta de Covela has - for at least five centuries now - straddled the rugged terrain where two of Portugal's best-known wine-producing regions now meet. At the end of the 1980s Quinta de Covela was acquired by businessman Nuno Araújo who invested heavily in the estate's vines and wines, and created the brand Covela. Over the next years, the wines gained a reputation nationally and internationally with their modern labels and distinct blends.

General grape descriptions

Avesso

Avesso is grown in the Vinhos Verdes region. However, it is mainly planted near the Douro region, in the sub-regions of Baião, Resende and Cinfães, where it finds the ideal conditions for its development, since these soils are drier and less fertile than those of the other areas of Vinhos Verdes. Avesso’s bunches are medium-sized, with big, yellowish green berries. Wines produced with this grape variety are aromatic and very harmonious and tasty. Avesso’s qualities are much appreciated when the ripening conditions allow the production of wines containing at least 11% of alcohol.
