Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

"Clos Windsbuhl"

RARELY SEEN: CHARDONNAY FROM ALSACE

The wine, not to be sold as Alsace but instead just "Vin de table" because it is made from Chardonnay, which is not a permitted grape in the Alsace appellation. Floral scent with a little honey tone and slightly toasted touch from small oak barrels. Fruity, quite round, rich in taste, which is tightened by acidity and limestones tones in the aftertaste. A tense synthesis of Burgundy and Alsace. The fruit is from approx. 30-year-old vines growing on seashell in south-east-facing Clos Windsbuhl on the hill behind the tourist town of Riquewihr. A field with a long ripening period that is harvested late and always provides great flavor in the wines.

ABOUT THE WINERY

DOMAINE ZIND-HUMBRECHT

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht with Olivier Humbrecht in charge enjoys a good reputation worldwide. The way to create the great wines was laid already in the 1970s, when Olivier's father, Léonard Humbrecht, succeeded in buying some of Alsace's best plots on the very steep slopes, after they had being left by farmers searching for flatter areas. The domain has been biodynamically certified since 2002 and is generally known as one of the major pioneers of biodynamics in France.

General grape descriptions

Chardonnay

Wine drinkers find it flatteringly easy to enjoy, with its broad, exuberant charms, relatively high alcohol and low acidity, and lack of powerful scent. Vine growers find it easy to grow productively and profitably (it can yield well, ripen usefully early, although buds rather too early for frost-free comfort in cool climates). And winemakers revel in the range of different winemaking techniques to which Chardonnay readily submits: not just a wide range of dry white wines with more weight than most, but delicate sparkling wines and even a few extremely successful sweet white wines made with the benefit of 'noble rot'.
