Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

"Roche Calcaire"

BIODYNAMIC RIESLING FROM ALSACE

"Roche Calcaire" comes from Zind-Humbrecht's fields dominated by limestone, as parts of Clos Häuserer, Heimbourg or Clos Windsbuhl, but the majority always comes from vines planted in the 60s and 70s in fields around Goldert in Gueberschwihr. In fact, the wine was named Gueberschwihr until 2011, but the law no longer allowed it, as only Zind-Humbrecht used the name. Therefore, it has since carried the name "Calcaire" on the label instead. Logically, since it is largely the soil that draws the style of the wine. The earth absorbs solar heat slowly; the grapes ripen quite late and the wine is full-bodied and solid with good acidity and nice length.

ABOUT THE WINERY

DOMAINE ZIND-HUMBRECHT

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht with Olivier Humbrecht in charge enjoys a good reputation worldwide. The way to create the great wines was laid already in the 1970s, when Olivier's father, Léonard Humbrecht, succeeded in buying some of Alsace's best plots on the very steep slopes, after they had being left by farmers searching for flatter areas. The domain has been biodynamically certified since 2002 and is generally known as one of the major pioneers of biodynamics in France.

General grape descriptions

Riesling

Riesling is grape from the Alsace region (France), Germany and Austria but Germany is the largest producer in the word of Riesling wines,  which goes from the dry wines to sweet. This grape is cultivated in warm or cold climates and produces high-quality wines witch evolve well over the years. They are very aromatic wines and with pronounced acidity. Riseling wines with sweet characteristics goes well with spicy food as Indian and Thai cuisine. The dried Riesling  goes well with slightly fat meats like the duck. Most present aromas: lima, green apple, beeswax, jasmine and gasoline.
